News Reporter The 48-year-old West Van- couver-Howe Sound MLA and B.C. Environment Minister is probably one of the busiest politi- cians in Victoria...and he’s no stranger to controversy. He made headlires last November, the day he was ap- pointed environment minister, when he invited reporters to join him in eating crabs from Howe Sound, an area in his riding closed to crab harvesting because of its high pollution levels. But despite his penchant for making such provocative state- ments, Reynolds is also one of the his native Toronto in 1964. They include working as a greeting card salesman and then spending 32 years behind a microphone as an open-line host on the now defunct Vancouver radio station CJOR, which was owned by West Van- couver millionaire Jimmy Pattison. Reynolds was first elected as a Tory MP in 1972 in the Burnaby- Richmond-Delta riding. He was re-elected in 1974, but left federal politics in 1977 and was set to go back into sales when he was offered the radio job. “They made me an offer I couldn't refuse,’’ says Reynolds. ‘sJimmy Pattison is an exciting person to work for. Although you didn’t have a lot of direct dealings with him day by day, at the sta- tion, if you were a part of one of his companies, you were always in an exciting business.’” Sitting in his West Vancouver constituency office, sipping tea from a mug that reads ‘‘Environ- ment: Keep It Green” and with four people sitting in his outer of- fice waiting to see him, Reynolds reflects on his political career and admits the jot can take its toll on a politician’s family life. “The six years I spent in Ot- NEWS photo Cindy jcodmar: most accessible cabinet ministers in 1T*S A rare day when West Vancouver-Howe Sound MLA John Reynolds can escape from his job as B.C.
