Dear Editor: I object to the blatant example i in the North Shore News of the adage ‘sex sells.’ I refer to the current advertisement with a bikini- clad woman illustrating the coy caption, ‘‘Wait till you sec what we're going to uncover on September t.’’ The ad promises a new auto section with more fun, excitement and sex appeal. With this approach to advertising perhaps we can anticipate seeing in a forthcoming issue a young stud dressed in designer briefs while perched provocatively on a range stove, advising readers of a hot new home and garden section featuring fun methods of combat- ting soil erosion, exciting Victorian panelling effects, and choosing doors with sex appeal. Women stripped of dignity Since you (by inference) strip women of their digni- ty by making their bodies a saleable commodity, sure- ly you're prepared to do the same to men. And while we’re on the topic of exploitation, could you please run « companion picce entitled Sunshine Boy to balance your sexist Sunshine Girl? A typical caption might read: Rocky has travelled to Katmandu, Toronto and Spuzzum. In the future he plans to study auto mechanics and eventually customize his Ford Fairmont. Who knows, there may be hordes of cute male bimbos willing to sacrifice their self-respect for $25 and media exposure. Valerie Dare North Vancouver RON ZALKO HEALTH CLUB is expanding its facilities on MLA Davis ‘a spectator’ Dear Editor: Recently, Jack Davis, MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour and Minister of Energy, publicly stated that Canadians are spectators, while foreign investors take over our best land and resource in- dustries. If he is truly concerned, why did he personally abandon the many thousands of Canadians who wanted to stop the sale of West Kootenay Power and Light to Utilicorp of Missouri? Why, even to this day, leave the B.C. Utilities Commission without proper government legislation in stopping foreign ownership? Being Minister of Energy, he could pro- vide leadership to rectify this, even now. Knowing that the USA strictly forbids Canadians from owning US hydro-electric utilities, why did he support the sale of WKPL to Americans, thereby aiding Ameri- cans in their discrimination against Canadians? ast cars 1g. fepack bearin Ke shoes, or orga I'S AMATTER OF LIFZ AND BREATH He claims that we must get out of debt if we are to reduce the con- trol of foreign investors over us. Yet the federal and B.C. govern- ment put us in debt by using public funds as corporate welfare, such as giving $134 million to Cominco. After making approximately $200 million in profits in 1988, why wasn’t Cominco forced to repay the public’s $134 million? Further bankrupting all Cana- dians are stupid regulations, sup- ported by both governments, which allow foreign investors to freely export capital from Canada and control us from afar. He also stated that he didn't want offshore investors buying up Canada. Why then, did he give them incentive to follow the Amer- ican lead in the colonization of Canada through his strong support for Mulroney’s free trade agree- ment? The reason Canadians are debt- ridden tenants in their own country controlled by foreign ownership is because government men like Jack Davis have chosen to be idle spec- tators rather than true patriots standing on guard for Canada.
