and safety standards. As a genera!
tule, ‘do-it-yourselfers’ should
never tamper with major compo-
nents of their heating systems such
as burners and controls,

maintenance company. However,

there are several minor
maintenance jobs which consumers
can, and should perform during
the heating season to keep their
furnaces operating at peak effi-
ciency.

ciency gus furnaces, it is especially
important to refer to the owner’s
manual as these units may require
other maintenance, cleaning or
flushing than listed below.

Above all, keep the area around
the furnace free from dust and
dirt. Clean or change furnace
filters several times during the
heating season as heavily soiled or

clogged filters reduce furnace effi-
ciency and, in extreme cases, can
cause the furnace to shut off.

Remember to also inspect the
fan belt on the blower motor for
signs of wear, and to have it
teplaced if necessary. Vacuum the
fan enclosure and lubricate the
motor if recommended by the
manufacturer in the owner’s man-
ual which accompanies every fur-
face.

Always turn the furnace power
switch off before removing furnace
panels to inspect this area. Replace
all panels securely and turn the
furnace switch back on when you
are finished.

system. Masonry chimneys without
a clay or metal liner should be ex-
amined closely at least once a year
for deterioration due to condensa-
tion from the products of combus-
tion.

The clean-out door at the base
of the chimney should be opened
and any debris cleaned out. Use a
mirror to look up the chimney and
make sure it is free and clean from
obstructions such as loose mortar
or bricks. When a chimney has an
offset, a chimney specialist should
be called to examine the flue pas-
sageway.

If you turned off the pilot for

the summer, follow the manufac-
turer’s instructions on or near the
pilot control when relighting. After
relighting, turn up the thermostat
to make certain all burners are lit.

Most new high-efficiency gas
furnaces utilize a spark ignition by
simply turning up the furnace
thermostat when it is in the warm
position. If you encounter pro-
blems with either lighting systems,
tefer maintenance to your gas
company or qualified service rep-
resentative.

You can also help improve your
furnace’s efficiency in other areas
of your home by making sure fur-
niture, drapes and rugs do not
cover warm air registers .

FIRE HAZARD

RUSSELL INDUSTRIES Ltd. and Canadian Stan-
dards Association (CSA) are warning owners of in-
candescent ceiling surface lighting fixtures manufac-
tured by Russell Industries to stop using them im-
mediately because they pose a potential fire hazard.

This recall applies to fixtures with Cat. No’s 310-
241, 310-242, 310-246, 310-313, 310-432, 310-437,
310-613, 310-614, 310-631, 310-632, 310-610 and
310-611, The fixtures are provided with three, four or
six candelabra base lampholders and have an open
bottom or totally enclosed glass diffuser.

internal wiring to overheat. These fixtures are used in
residential installations primarily in British Columbia.
The manufacturer will replace returned fixtures
with CSA-certified units. Replacement units will be
identified with caution labels and a date code.
The date code will consist of the month and year
after July, 1988.
