In fact, it’s so valuable that Nagel says it should be a_ national heritage site. Crystals are formed when water containing minerals trickles down the walls of underground open- ings. As the chemical nature of the water changes, the crystals change in color and shape. “At Rock Candy mine these underground pockets are unusually large and there are many of them. That’s why it has produced thou- sands of specimens,’’ Nagel says. “I've seen an underground pocket that’s four feet wide and 35 feet long lined with crystals.” Under terms of the agreement, the university retains access to the mine, first marketing rights to the best crystal specimens, and a per- centage of the profits. “The best specimens from Rock Candy Mine could be worth thou- sands of dollars,’’ Nagel said.
