Wan 24 ~ Friday, Octeber 23, 1987 - North Shore News Use caution installing wood-burning stoves IF YOU are thinking of installing a wood-burning stove, keep your famiiy’s safety and your home- owner's policy in mind, warns Jack Lyndon, president, Insurance Bureau of Canada. “If your wood stove is not in- stalled properly, it may be a serious fire hazard. It’s important, too, to realize that your insurance company may not offer to con- tinue coverage of your home if your wood stove and its installa- tion do not meet safety stan- dards.”” Wood-burning stoves are not required by law to be certified. However, units which are certified have been tested to safety stan- dards and are required to have adequate manufacturer’s installa- tion instructions. ‘*For these reasons, it is in the consumer’s interest to purchase certified units and to have them properly installed,’’ he says. For proper selection and in- stallation of a wood-burning stove in your home, keep these steps in mind, adds John Gulland, member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) committee responsible for writing the In- stallation Code for Solid Fuel Burning Appliances and Equip- ment. ‘ Look for the certification mark on the label affixed to the wood stove. ¢ Discuss installation require- ments with a reliable retailer/ installer. © Before buying the unit, advise your insurance agent that you are thinking of instaling a wood-burn- ing stove. * Contact your municipality and ask if a building permit is neces- sary. © Make sure the installer is using the CSA Installation Code. If in- stalling the unit yourself, check with the retailer/installer before using it. e Ask your insurance agent to update your homeowner’s policy. Take these steps, if you have an existing wood stove installation: © Check for a certification mark on your: wood stove located near the manufacturer’s nameplate. © Ask the most reliable source in your area to check the installation. This may be your local fire or building inspector or a reputable retailer/installer who uses’ CSA’s Installation Code. Maintenance of your certified and properly installed wood stove is also essential to the safe and ef- ficient use of this appliance, says Gulland. e Always make sure your stove pipes and chimney are in good condition and check them regularly for creosote buildup. © Shiny creosote deposits which look like black paint are an indica- tion that your wood stove system is not working properly. Call a chimney sweep for help. * Burn seasoned wood to minimize creosote buildup. Wood which is cut, split and stacked under cover to air dry in the spring will be seasoned and ready for burning in the fall. Longer storage times, however, are preferable. * During and after the heating season, check that the wood stove hinges, doors, latches, gaskets and operating controls are functioning properly. ® Don’t load the stove with too much wood. This can cause the wood to smoulder which, in turn, contributes to excessive creosote buildup. . ‘ For more information on wood stove installation, maintenance and safe operation: ° A booklet called, ‘‘Residential ; ; : Fan Back Dinette Group 4 comfortable chairs, and glass top table 5 pe. group.
