at From page 28 Shore to include nine branches, with three in West Vancouver and six. in North Vancouver, and numerous **Personal Touch" banking machines. Contemporary concerns of the bank are the support and development of an independent business sector and servicing large commercial accounts. As the field has become more competitive over the years, banks, trust companies and credit unions have responded to ever more sophisticated consumer demands with a broadened scope of services. New ways of doing business are proliferating. Accordingly, the traditional distinctions between the various types of financial institu- tions are becoming blurred. Pressures for change from the marketplace translate into im- provements in the quality, cost and range of services available to both savers and borrowers. The choices are no longer as easy as simpiy having to decide be- tween savings and chequing ac- counts. Technological advances such as automatic banking machines make accounts more accessible and ironically have caused a redoubling in effort by all institutions to make the consumer’s in-branch banking experience an efficient and friendly transaction. The North Shore’s North Shore Community Credit Union can lay clair) to the distinction of being the only financial institution ac- tually born and bred locally. Serving the community for the past 45 years, ths first version of the credit union operated from the basement of the credit union’s first manager, Tom Dearlove. It was founded May 7, 1941 on charter member deposits that totalled $10. Over the credit union’s first 30 years total assets rose to $4 million. In the next 15 years, jumped to $224 million. The credit union is involved in financing commercial mortgages and carries a large percentage of personal mortgages on the North Shore. Most of the institution’s invest- assets KS respi ment thrust is located in B.C. Today the credit union, the sev- enth largest in B.C. and 15th larg- est in Canada, represents 35.000 members. A merger with Harbour Savings Credit Union in February 1986, added $39 million in assets. During 1986, the North Shore Community Credit Union granted 4,656 loans worth a total of $70 million to its members. Half of the amount was advanced to finance housing. The institution was the first to offer cash machines to B.C. con- sumers. Continuing its innovative ways, the credit union introduced a Canadian first to the banking community earlier this year by paying its members to use the cash machines. The lower cost of transactions through the machines is passed on to the consumer with an adjusted pricing structure. With four branches on the North Shore, Canada Trust offers banking, real estate and trust ser- vices locally. A merger with Canada Perma- nent Trust in January 1986, swell- ed the institution's number of branches from 200 to 300 making it the ninth largest financial in- stitution in the country with a total of $24 hillion in corporate assets and assets under administration exceeding $52 billion as of Dec. 31, 1986. Nuation-wide, savings and loan services are available through the financial services branches. Twen- ty-two offices offer personal pen- sion and corporate trust services. Retail and commercial real estate brokerage services are available through 177 offices across the country. Said Canada Trust assistant vice-president Rod Whitwham, “We are always trying to improve services in terms of staff approach and the time a customer spends doing business at the branch.”’ With two branches on the North Shore, National Trust’s wide selec- tion of consumer options is in- dicative of the inexorable explo- sion of banking services available today.
