IF YOUR co-worker wants to smoke himself to death, that's his business, right? Not so, says the latest medical research proving once and for all that even non-smokers who take good care of their health can and do die from breathing second-hand smoke. Recent studies in the U.S. link “involuntary smoking” to as many as 4,700 deaths a year among non-smokers. In Canada, with one tenth the population of the U.S., that figure could be as high as 500, acccording to Dr. Frederic Bass, chairman of the tobacco and illness committee of the British Columbia Medical Association. “If there really are S00 people dying in Canada every year because of second- hand smoke, that’s a substantial risk,’’ says Bass. ‘‘The most unfair aspect is it’s very inequitable. People who choose to take good care of themselves are just as much at risk.”” SIDESTREAM SMOKE Sidestream smoke, coming directly from the burning end of a cigarette, is most harmful to a non-smoker. Many successful quitters credit a change in outlook with helping them kick the smoking habit. CONDITIONS DETERIORATE These individuals, who may suf- fer from allergies, asthma or heart conditions, don’t appear to be any less healthy than the rest of us on the outside, but when forced to breathe polluted air, their condi- tions deteriorate. Most people are aware of the risks to unborn children when a mother smokes. Smoking cuts down the amount of oxygen reaching the fetus and can retard - its growth, producing an undersiz- ed baby. And via ultrasonic tests, fetal breathing movements can be seen to reduce significantly after a mother smokes just one cigarette. But the effects of cigarette smoke on young, growing children are also quite dramatic and many parents remain unaware of these health risks. CHILDREN AFFECTED “We have many studies that show very clearly children are hos- pitalized more (when raised in 2 smoking household), they suffer more respiratory problems and as they get older, they lose more days from school,’’ Bass said. Some studies even fink developmental difficulties and hyperactivity to breathing second-hand smoke, Smoking parents not only direct- ly put their children’s health at risk, they also tend to transmit their smoking behavior.
