Dear Editor:

.What does it say about a com-
munity when nobody seems to care
when its citizens begin killing
themselves, as graphically .demon-
strated by two recent suicides in
Vancouver's downtown eastside?

The incident involving a
destitute 61-year-cld man, who
- hurled himself under the wheels of
a gravel truck April 4, poignantly
points out a socicty which has ‘its
priorities terribly, mixed-up. The
focal media didn’t even bother
with the story unti) it was ‘‘leak-
‘ed’ in the House of Commons,
April 8. ,

The media always maintains a
sanctimonious policy of avoiding
these messy occurrences, unless, of
course, they involve a rock or
movie star. But the life of an
anonymous skid row dweller is
hardly considered ‘‘news."’

No inquiry or convention of
psychologists are needed to con-
vince me why these people would
take such drastic action, in light of
the mass Expo evictions in the
area.

The evictions are unnecessary
and repugnant, the result of
callous governments and an uncar-
ing ‘public attitude. Try, but we
cannot hide from this reality.

It would be a sad state indeed,
if, unlike leaving one’s heart in
San Francisco, we lost our con-
science in Vancouver. .
