Western Fashion

ALTHOUGH membership of the Western Canadian De-
signers and Fashion Assoc. recently declined from 240 to 42
members, the association’s new president Lois McPherson
says all is well on the western fashion front.

McPherson says the drop in
membership is because the
WCDFA. was legally registered as
an association with the B.C. gov-
ernment last year, and as a result it
has to re-establish its membership.

nadian designers and the fashion
industry itself.

Sheryl! Dawson, the founding
president, said her group didn’t
officially register the association
because ‘‘there had never been an
association like ours before and we
wanted the bugs ironed out first.”

Since the new association got
“its rubber stamp of approval,"’
the WCDFA has not lost time get-
ting organized, said media direc-
tor, Natalie Chapman.

The association holds fashion
shows to raise money for the Van-
couver Food Bank,for example.

And during Expo 86, the
WCDFA will produce and coordi-
nate the fashion shows that will
appear at the B.C, Pavilion.

Keeping in sight its mandate to
promote the growth and develop-
ment of Western Canadian design-
ers, the Vancouver-based WC DFA
sewed up a deal Jate last year to
form a Manitoba chapter.

Klara Piko, a well-known Win-
nipeg designer, who wants to tap
the wealth of fashion talent in her
native province, liked how the
WCDFA, operated, and decided to
form a Manitoba chapter.

What makes the WCDFA dif-
ferent from other designer
organizations, at least when it was
formed in 1980, is the fact that it
isn’t a ‘‘closed shop.’’

DESIGNERS

Even if a designer didn’t make it
through the selection process to
become a designer actively pro-
moted by WCDFA, Dawson said
that designer could still become a
general member and still be in-

volved.
