This year, government at all levels is grabbing 49.8 cents of every buck Cana- dians earn, or can otherwise steal. That’s more than a full percentage point more than was grabbed fast year, and no doubt the glad day will dawn when the 50 per cent hurdle is jumped and we are “all turned into Swedes.. July 1 is Canada Day, and by Doug Collins lations have never been challenged. Nationally, Tax Freedom Day, as Michael Walker and his cohorts call it, falls on July 1. What that means is that if all the money you earn this year were consid- ered as a whole, -and taxes at all levels were also consid- ered as a whole (or hole) you have to work from January 1 to July 1 to pay the tax bill. The rest you get to keep. It doesn’t work that way, of course, because they Ist you keep bits of your own money as you go along, just to make you feel good. But the Fraser Institute has a point. But in spite of restraint, and even though we fared a bit better than some of the other sufferers in the land, B.C.’s TFD was June 23, as compared with June 13 last year and June 8 in 1983. So TFD with them is later ‘than it would be if those resources didn’t exist. In short, the oil companies and forest comnpanies are put- ting a lot into the pot that Ontario, for instance, doesn’t get that way. But even if natural resources are excluded, TFD is still bad news. It was June 22 for Canada as a whole, June 15 for B.C., and June 29 for Alberta. (TFD for Alberta, inclusive of oil revenues, etc., is- August 28, which shows that ty crack about Christmas wasn't too far. off the mark.) In the country as a whole, TFD exclusive of natural resources was June 22, sather than July $, which shouldn’t make you feel much better, because the more industry is taxed, the less it has left to spend on development. So TFD in Saskatchewan was June 9 instead of June 15. Even if its natural resource taxes are included, the date went back to July 6 from July 13. Which, 1 suspect, comes from having got rid of the socialists. Ht occurs to me that in spite of all the moaning Ca- nadians do about taxes, they actually like having their butts taxed off.
