CRUISING FOR SINGLES A reason for running away to sea If single men realized what a tempting banquet of single ladies awaited them on a cruise, the ships would be mobbed. As it is, there are far more single women passengers than men. However, there is some light in the darkness for younger single women - by way of hundreds of hand- some, young, SINGLE, officers and crew. And the young women that I talked to were having a marvellous tuume. Our cruise presented a bit of a problem to the Chief Dining Room Steward. For the second sitting of meals he had no less than 40 young attractive girls to seat. What to do? If he scattered them around the room, every young steward on the ship would be working at half speed, spilling soup on the other passengers as he ogled the pretty women. With a stroke of genius, he grouped ali forty in one balcony area and assigned his most. stable staff members to work there. In addition, he warned everyone NOT assigned to the balcony that they'd have trayel- by Barbara McCreadie midnight buffet duty every night should they be found visiting the balcony. Did that stop anything? Not noticably. Except that there was a heiluva lot of staff appearing to serve the midnight buffet. As for young, single male passengers, there were only two that I saw and since they persisted in calling each other “Darling,” I doubt if they were interested in the arrangements. | know for sure that if I had a son who had just done something splendid like graduate from university with honors I'd want to give him the gift of a lifetime - a ticket on the Love Boat. If the pretty passengers didn’t suit him, I counted about 25 of the prettiest young English girls em- ployed about the ship. As a rule-of thumb about cruising for singles: Short cruises and cheap cruises attract more young passengers. Longer, and more expensive Ones attract more of the older set. On the first kind, the activities will reflect the age of the passengers. On the second kind, the activities may be a bit more sedate but the competition is less. As for permanent relation- ships developing, who knows’? One of my favorite stories concerns the young lady passenger who asked her new-found lover, a ship's officer, what they would do tomorrow when the ship reached it’s destination. “I don’t know about you, lady, but I'm going to get to hell home to my wife and kids.” I'm not sure if that story is true or not but here are two that I KNOW are true - and you'll probably like them better. The first concerns a close friend of mine, Donna Chiodi. As a young girl, she went on a Caribbean cruise with her parents - Costa Lines Frederico “C” to be exact. On board she met a young dining room steward named Gionni Chiodi. That was 12 years ago. Donna and Gianni own and operate the Bar Principe near the central station in Genoa. Have two litde kids. Nice people. The second story concerns the current Captain of the Island Princess. And the story I heard came from the best possible source - his wife. She was a young single girl travelling home _ to Australia aboard a_ ship. “Going home to please the Canada Day - not Dominion Day OTTAWA (UPC) - The July 1 Dominion Day holiday could officially be renamed “Canada Day” this year - but only if the opposition agrees to Limiting debate on such a motion to one day, Sports Minister Gerald Regan said. “There is a Obill_ that provides for the name change,” Regan said dumng question penod in the House of Commons. “The bill could pass in one day - in this the year that the constitution was patriated - if the opposition is willing to undertake such = co- operation,” Regan said replying to a question from Liberal MP Maurice Harquail. However, Opposition leader Joe Clark and NDP leader Ed Broadbent could offer no such guarantees. “My personal view is that the name should _ be changed,”’ Clark told reporters outside the House. “But we'll have to look at the bill and discuss it in caucus.” Broadbent also said he had no personal objections to the name change but added that it would have to be discussed by his party's MPs.
