New approach to crime prevention BRINGING CRIMINAL AND VICTIM TOGETHER By NANCY WEATHERLEY CRIMINALS and their victims are being brought face to face by a new society that has been formed on _ the North Shore in a new approach to crime prevention. The St. Leonard's Society of the North Shore has just received a $5,000 provincial Start up grant and North Van City has granted them a further $500. The idea of bringing victim and offender together is tO promote greater un- derstanding of the crime to both parties. It gives the offender a chance to ask all the questions that have been plaguing him. Namely Why Me? Why that day? Were you watching me for a long time first? Many victims associate even the most minor of cnmes with an organization such as the Mafia out to get them. and their sense of helplessness is increased. But Wilma Dougtas Dungey, who is the life and soul of the the local chapter of St. Leonards,. says often the victim is not helpless to prevent a crime against him. She says many people are convinced minor crimes go unpunished and a victim’s anger will be somewhat alleviated by knowing what happened to the offender. Before the two actually meet, each has an interview with a counsellor where they can speak freely about the incident and their feelings.
