C7 - Sunday News, February 7, 1982 Don’t wear open toed sandals in the sand There's lots to see and do in Tucson but we didn’t see or do a helluva lot. It’s a big city, and if you like big cities, you'll probably like Tucson. Brian didn't care much for it, I was lukewarm but then, we didn’t really give ita chance. What does a two-day visit tell you about anywhere? I was told about two excellent restaurants but since we were staying at a guest ranch we ate our meals there. If you're visiting and staying in an ordinary hotel, check out the Palomino and the Tack Room. And, for breakfast and lunch, I heard about two places under the same Management where you can get an outstanding breakfast, home _ style, for 99¢. “Robert's” is near Speedway and Alverson and “Gus Balon” is on 22nd, three blocks west of Wilmot. I can't give any personal guarantees but give them a try. Both are closed Sun- days. We did one day of touring in Tucson. The Tanque Verde Guest Ranch where we stayed is at the dead end (east) of Speedway. At the western dead end is a T- intersection. Turn left and you'll be in Old Tucson, tum mght and youll get to the Sonora desert Museum. The two are only a couple of mules apart. After a hearty breakfast at the guest ranch, we started out for Old Tucson. This tounst attraction was first built in 1919 as a movie location. Craftsmen con- structed a whole town out of adobe for the filming of “Arizona”. After that, everyone forgot about the place until 1959 when it was tumed into a modern film location and a tounst trap. The noise terrified the baby and she shrieked in protest. The parents were much more interested in seeing the show than in their kid's ears so they sat through the whole thing. I sincerely hope that she gets even with them and shrieks at scheduled intervals for two months. We prowled around for most of the morning, riding the stagecoach, admiring the old carousel and peaking into the “sets”. Wear closed, flat shoes. Dust and more dust. My hayfever kicked up and I sneezed constantly. Young kids would get a kick out of it. Big kids, maybe. Costs $6.19 for adults, $3.59 for kids. Once you're in, rides are free. If you're planning to do both the Sonora Desert Museum and Old Tucson in one day, pack a lunch. The food in both places is hamburger heaven. If you don't pack a lunch, eat at Old Tucson — the cafetena at the Sonora is the pits. The Sonora Desert Museum is marvellous. When I do it again, I'll visit in the morning, leaving Oid Tucson for the afternoon. Why? Because the animals snooze more in the af- ternoon. Sonora is a zoo and museum of natural history. They have live specimens of all the natural flora and fauna of the Sonora desert. Want to get real chummy with a tarantula? At certain times of day a lady gives a talk on the lifestyles of the beasties while one ambles around her arms and hands. She's happy to let you have a feel. I abstained. Even though the lady assured me that her pet was gentle, harmless, touching and sensitive, spiders give me the creeps. Her particular specimen was unique as she was female. You can tell the difference because the males are darked colored. Her Preparing for a trip? Isn't that nice to know? At the gateway into the Soinora Desert Museum, you'll get handed a map with a marked trail to follow — see your fill of the natural life of the desert. Snakes? You bet rattiers, sidewinders, bull sankes and garters. Scorpions the little ones are the dangerous ones. The big ones are harmless. The big cats are beautiful; the small ones even lovlier. Bears snooze. But, for fun, spend a bit of time with the Prairie Dogs. I had never understood why they were called “dogs”. Now I do! They have tails that wag constantly. And they bark. They clown around, en- joytng each other’s company and, I suspect, an audience. Applause! They love it, and do their best to put on a good show. Here, again, you need good walking shoes. Damn those sandals! I had half of the Sonora desert crunched up under my toes. Will J never learn? Desert Museum) your day Between the two (Old will be filled. Enough, Tucson and the Sonora already!
