However, the robber managed to escape and left the bank with about $6,000 | in cash. Even so, within 36 hours North Vancouver RCMP had two men in custody North Van _ detectives picked up a 17-year-old youth and a man of 19 ina Richmond hotel and arrested the two after a brief struggle in the early hours of Monday morning. The bank, at 1180 East 27th, Street, was robbed shortly before 3 p.m. when a man holding what was later discovered fo be an air gun told a teller to fill up a bag with money and then pass it on to the other | three tellers for them to also fill it with cash. When all four tellers had turned over their money, totalling about $6,000, the tobber grabbed the bag and ran towards the bank door. As he reached the en- trance, a man who was a CONTINUED ON PAGE A4 and had recovered about $3,000 which they said was part of the haul stolen from the bank. (Terry Peters photo) questions a a By NOEL WRIGHT The hospital nomina- committee for to- night’s.crucial elections to the Lions Gate Hos- pital board was sud- denly faced with a major problem Mon- day when Ann Arnott, one of its key candi- dates, was forced to withdraw her name because of upcoming surgery. This has left the com- mittee frantically seeking a suitable last-minute sub- stitute for nomination before tonight's voting begins. A well known and respected community figure dedicated for many years to freedom of choice on the abortion issue, Arnott’s election had been widely regarded as a shoe-in. She is a former West Vancouver alderman and former chairman of the West Van Recreation Commission. In a letter to Maurice Fellis, board chairman, Arnott said: “It as with the deepest regret that | must withdraw my name from the hst of candidates standing for election to the Lions Gate Hospital board “1 must go into hospital this weck for surgery and my convalescence would make it ampossible to serve on the board for at least the rest of the year, should I be elected.” Arnott stressed in the letter that her reason for standing was to censure the board remained = above pohtics and personal bias. : Increasing cloud with a few! showers late in the day THURSDAY: Showers, cooler.
