(Terry Peters photo) SEYMOUR SOCREDS NOMINATE a Jack Davis romps home By VIC HODSON Some 400 members of the North Vancouver-Seymour riding Social Credit Association enthusiastically applauded Wednesday night when Jack Davis was elected as their candidate in the May 31 byelection. Ironically, the need for a byelection was created when Davis resigned, first as cabinet minister and later as MLA, following his fraud conviction last fall for d ing airline tickets issued to hime from first class to economy. The majority of the 207 voting delegates present obviously chose to ignore the legal findings, because they quickly elected him on the first ballot against two seasoned campaigners, Anders Aalborg, who was an MLA and cabinet minister in the Social Credit govern-. ment of Alberta from 1984- 67 and Stell Jo Dean, former alderman of the City of North Vancouver and noted collector of other influential positions in a multitude of North Shore organizations. The delegate vote for Davis must have been im- pressive — atleast more than 30 percent of the total votes cast — to ensure a first ballot win. His success might not- have been so complete ‘had former North Van District alderman Jim Poyner not backed down. At least 80 percent of those present appeared to range in age from the mid- forties to the higher brackets of senior citizens, and they cheered: and rose in their seats when 62-year-old Davis was announced as_ the winner. One had the impression that, with this audience, the speeches of the three aspirants were just a tem- porary formality, to be enduried until the. voting started. Actually, Davis made the shortest speech of the three. In condensed form, he said he was running because he wanted to continue serving the riding and the province, adding that he had always seemed to attract the “swing” vote of the uncommitted in all his previous election victories and expected to do so again in this one. This short declaration. drew much louder applause than that for Aalborg who preceded him with a typical politicians’ specch, and for Dean, whose speech was Canada’s original & B.C.’s only FULL LINE F/I / /T | FERRARI- LANCIA 2422 Burrard at Broadway 736-3771 asked more or less a reading from her promotional sheet handed out to members as they entered the mecting room in the Coach House Motor Hotel. In his victory speech Davis said the eyes of the whole province would be upon the two North Shore byelections and added that the results . would show that Social Credit was still the predominant party in B.C. “We have got to win these byelections,” he said, “because the whole of Canada will be watching the results with great interest.” In a later group interview Davis was asked whether he had expected his court case to be raised. He said he had thought it might come up, but was giad it hadn't. When if he expected to » ..because every child has the right to smile return to the cabinet he tersely declined comment. Davis was obviously supported by a large majority of the assembled Socreds, but not all were pleased. One prominent .
