MAILBOX MP Mary Collins adds up GST savings Dear Editor: 1 wisi to bring your attention to inaccuracies in the information in the news article on the GST by teporter Surj Rattan, published in the Jan. 4 edition of the North Shore News. The information in the Table printed on page five of the Winter 1990 edition of my Parliamentary Report is correct. The examples that I used were excerpts from the publication Consumers’ Guide to the GST and Prices issued by the GST Con- sumers’ Information Office. The results that were cited in the table were calculated from data obtain- ed from Statistics Canada. The example price includes the old Federal Sales Tax (FST) as well as an average of the Provin- cia) Sales Taxes (PST) applicable, which is different for each item on the list. Therefore, in the carpet exam- ple, $40 includes a PST of seven per cent or $2.62 and a FST of $2.80. Subtracting both PST and the FST one arrives at the selling price of $34.58 which is then multiplied by the seven per cent GST. The primary objective of publishing this table was to show the effect of the GST on various consumer purchases and to dem- onstrate how the GST is a replacement tax for the former Federal Sales Tax. Hon. Mary Collins, PC, MP Capilano-Howe Sound Candidate had many backers Dear Editor: I am writing to correct a state- ment in the letter of Ms Sheila Adams, Committee to Elect Carol Ann Reynolds, which was printed in your Dec. 7, 1990 issued under the heading ‘‘Call for in- dependence”’ which stated that | “‘was backed by the Social Credit Party and supported by the three North Shore MLAs.”’ Please be advised, I was not backed by the Social Credit Party. In fact, | was not backed by any organization, political or other- wise. The fact is I was backed by many individuals of differing po- litical persuasions; for example, by John Pozer who ran for the Liberal Party in the last federal election who was one of the co- chairmen of my campaign; by Angus Ree, a North Shore MLA who was the other co-chairman; and by Neil Thompson who ran for the Reform Party in the last federal election. | was supported by many people, not organiza- tions, including friends, acquain- tances and strangers. My best wishes to our new mayor, Mark Sager, and his council in their three-year term of office. H.J. Brice Macdougall West Vanccuver MLA Reynolds defends ad Dear Editor: I was very pleased to see that Mr. Ken J. Dawson (Sr.) of North Vancouver thought my ad in your paper was propaganda. Every MLA in the province is given up to $6,000 to do a household mail- er to every home in the consti- tuency that he/she represents. I chose to save the taxpayers some money and put a one-page ad in the North Shore News, which goes to every home in my constituency. I am sorry Mr. Dawson does not like our new dc-inking plant that has a $90-million benefit to British Columbia and also makes sure we recycle all our paper in the future, but that is why we have elections. I wish I could take the money that I have saved the taxpayers by doing my MLA up- date in this way, but unfortu- nately it is not permissable. I am sure the different charities Mr. Dawson mentions appreciate the support that we in the gov- ernment do give them — both personally and monetarily. John Reynolds, MLA West Vancouver-Howe Sound Enforce snow removal bylaws Dear Editor: I have a great idea which could decrease North Shore taxes and make walking safe year round: strictly enforce Bylaw 4949, Sec- tion 815 (removal of snow and ice from sidewalks). And increase the fine for non-compliance to $1,000 for businesses (present $75) and $250 for private residences (pres- ent $35). On Jan. 3, days after the snowfall, snow and ice still encas- ed the sidewalks alongside businesses on Marine Drive in North Vancouver. I gave up slipping and sliding for safety reasons. Employees at a car lot were actually washing cars in the parking lot while I struggled b ry. Today, along Ross Road, children were walking to school on the road as the sidewalks were still icy and dangerous. Does it need a fatal accident, awful injury, or a law suit before the snow removal bylaw is strictly enforced? David Avery North Vancouver Taxi driver deserves a big tip Dear Editor: Something good happened to me. Arriving from Ottawa the night when some roads were covered with ice I took a taxi to Lynn Valley. The driver, a new Cana- dian, originally from India, drove as far as Viewlynn Crescent; he did not want to try driving down Greylynn. He parked his car on Viewlynn, took my two suitcases and walked me down Greylynn Crescent, then Merlynn Crescent nearly to the end and then had to walk all the way back to his car. My heartfelt thanks to the driver.
