AS TOURISM and foreign
investment force major
changes upon most Lower
Mainland business communi-
ties, West Vancouver has man-
aged to preserve its quaintness
and genteel aloofness.

Yet, even here, long-term eco-
nomic change has reached into
places like Ambleside-by-the-Sea,
Dundarave and Caulfeild.
However, this is a change that is
being encouraged.

Brian Ledingham, director of
the West Vaacouver Chamber of
Commerce, said the future of com-
mercial business lies in smaller,
boutique-type stores and enclaves
built around shopping centres.

“There are over 200 small stores
in Ambleside; we're setting our-
selves up to take advantage of that
trend very nicely,” he said, adding
that the warehouse superstore trend
has gone by the boards.

As examples, he points to recent
developments like the shopping
centre that now is the nucleus of
Caulfeild Village, and Bellevue
Landing (at 14th Street), which
consists of 10 stores that open on to
a common area.

The chamber is counting on
areas like this to attract tourists,
who will be the driving force of
this development. “We have to
appeal to a wider audience to
attract people to West Van,” he
said. Toward that end, the chamber
is mounting a concerted effort to
attract people down from the Upper
Levels Highway into the village.

Ledingham cxpects that some
residents will object to increased
tourist traffic but for a municipality
with no industry to speak of, he
said promoting the retail trade is
about the only choice it has.

e Council for the Corporation of the District of
North Vancouver, pursuant to the provisions of the
Municipal Act, hereby gives notices of its intent to
adopt a siting area as described in the fol'~wing bylaw:

Bylaw 6681 - "Rezoning Bylaw 1006"

Applicant:
Richard Balfour, Architect on behalf of the North
Shore Private Hospital

Location:
(Lot 1, Block 16, District Lot 2025, Plan 1184)

Proposed Amendment:
To establish a siting area or building footprint to
specify where buildings can be constructed on the

property.

Purpose:
To regularize the existing hospital and allow for

minor additions. .

Pursuant to the provisions of section 956(4) of the
Municipal Act, the Council has waived the Public
Hearing insofar as the bylaw implements the land use
recommendations set out in the District Official
Community Plan. The Council will consider third
reading of the bylaw on August 22, 1994,

Any written submissions received by the Municipal
Clerk prior to Noon, Thursday, August 18, 1994, will be
circulated with Council's agenda packages.
Submissions received after that time will be distributed
