Fram Page 6 >= cate his feelings. The senti- ment is that men and women really are from two different planets emotionally. Harold is supposed to have developed human emo- tions by the film’s end, but Shaz:dling remains the automaton he was at the beginning of the picture. He seems to have lost enthusiasm for his character long before the credits roll. Bening, Kinnear, Fiorentino and John Goodman — as the agent investigating Harold — give good performances in limited roles. But the script seems slap-handedly written. And while the sex gags might appeal to teens, the film’s “R” rating relies on more mature tastes. @ Drowning Mona kx 1/2 (out of 5) : Directed by Nick Gomez. Starring Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Casey Affleck, Jamie Lee Curtis and Neve Campbell. THE town of Verplanck, New York, was used as a test market for Yugos — some might say the definition of hell itself. But when the town’s resident she-devil, Mona Dearly, turns up dead, no one is terribly upset and everyone is a suspect. Mona (Bette Midler, resurrecting her bitchy Ruthless People role) seems to have abused everyone in this scenic but seedy lit- tle town, where it seems everyone is having a bad hair day. So when her Yugo swab-dives into the Hudson, there are giggles and cheers all around. After all, Mona was known to go after her dim-witted hus- band Phil (William Fichtner) with a frying pan. No wonder he sought solace in a dirty game of Wheel of Fortune with Rona ‘(Jamie Lee Curtis), bitter waitress at the town diner. Jeff Dearly (Marcus Thomas), Mona’s sloth-like, beer-gu2- zling son, also wanted to kill his mother. In addition to years of verbal abuse, Mona might have been the reasor: Jeff fost his hand. (In one of the funnier sequences of the film, all the theo- Hes ¢ about how Jeff fost his hand involve him reaching for a cei.) ... + Soft-spoken Bobby (Casey Affieck) seems to have the greatest motive for killing Mona.
