And cooking up the batch that is the [9th - Annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival is a . new artistic director. ’.., Dugg Simpson took on the job after Sal > Ferreras, who programmed the show last year following the departure of Gary Cristal, left the Vancouver Folk ifusic Festival to work on a music festival project with Concord Pacific. "It failed to materialize, but the Jericho Park shindig survives. _ Simpson is a folk music veteran. He has been with the festival in various roles “just about for ever.” A friend of his (Wendy Solloway) was the volunteer coordinator at the time of the second year of the festival. Two weeks after he stepped off the plane frum Windsor, Ontario he joined up. * Solloway and Simpson had worked together on a weekend folk club in Windsor in the 1970s. “it was a bunch of people who would get together and assemble a coffee house. “We'd bring in the boxes with the table cloths, the wine bottles with the candles. There was a lot of interesting stuff going on in those days. David Essig was just coming up then. Willie P. Bennett, Nancy White. It was a good little scene.” Fast forward to 1996 and another really gocd scene.
