AN ALLEGED player ina a

fraud that resulted in jail sen-
tences for two North Shore
men was himself sentenced to
three years in jail last week in
connection with a $7.9 million

scam of the same federal gov-
ernment tax credit.

Dara Wilder, a former
Aldergrove resident who now lives
in Bellingham, was found guilty of
attempting to defraud the federal
gov rnment of $7.9 million in
taxes, Wilder was sentenced in
Winnipeg.

The tax fraud was associated
with the defunct Scientific
Research Tax Credit (SRTC).

The SRTC was a federal fiasco.
Its original purpose was to stimu-
late legitimate reseerch and devel-
opment in new technology projects.

SRTC loopholes jured fraud
schemes nationwide and cost the
federal government $1.8 billion in
lost taxes before it was cancelled
10 months after its inception.

Evidence at the Winnipeg court
case showed Wilde: promoted a
research project for a process to
convert wood into sugar and fuel.
Wilder told investors that $16 mil-
lion was spent on research equip-
ment, but Revenue Canada found
the cquipment to be extremely old
and its value grossly exaggerated.

For investors to claim the equip-
ment for tax credit, it would have
had to be new or unused, according
to Revenue Canada. If the false tax
credits and partnership losses had
been claimed, Revenue Canada
said $7.9 million would have been
lost in tax revenue.
