North Van special effects expert dies THE FILM industry was left a little poorer fast week when John Thomas, one of North America’s most respected spe-. cial effects men, died after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 46. The North Vancouver resident and his company, Thomas Special Effects, was a byword of movie magic and on-set safety in B.C. and in Hollywood. ; One of his earliest “gags” to . thrill audiences created the illusion that a young Clark Kent could out- _tun a speeding facomotive in the original Superman (1978). The. stunt. was accomplished by suspending an actor trom the side . of a moving camera truck... . . Although Thomas was most proud of creating invisible effects (the phony lurnber thai threatened to crush Richard Dreyfus in the cli- max for Stakeout and which experts assumed was the real McCoy), he and his company engineered some of the most. hair-raising stunts in modern times. : A. brief resume includes the climbing and falling scenes in . Cliffhanger and K2; the airplane -crash in Alive; and assorted may- hem in Bird on a Wire, Shoot to -Killand The Fly 2. JOHN THOMAS Although Thomas was interna- “tionally renowned, he nurtured the growth of the local industry and went out of his way to create local movie magic. Case in point: rigging ‘a 426-foot (130 m)} back-fall last year for the opening titles of Neort Rider. Veteran stuntmen and executive producer Danny Virtue, who per- formed the ‘stunt in downtown Vancouver, told reporters: “There are very few people who I would trust my life to, ur anyone else's. “He was a miracle worker — accident free.” Man fined for intimidation 35-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was recently fined a total of $1,350 in connection with charges of intimidation and breaching probation. ' Darrell Peter Atlay pleaded guilty to: & intimidating a man with violent threats to him and his children on Aug. 30, 1993, in Powell River; & breaching probation by failing to attend counselling between Oct. 27, 1992, and Nov. 16, 1992, in DAG! Powell River: breaching probation by contact- ing a woman on Feb. 8, 1993; breaching probation by conduct- ing an unsupervised telephone call with the same woman on Sept. 22, 1993, in Powell River.
