Car seat
buckle
defective

THE BRITISH Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA},
in cocperation with Transport Canada, is alerting consumers
that 14,609 units of the Ultara | child car seat have been
distributed across Canada with defective buckles. The af-
fected sects were manufactured by the Evenflo Juvenile Fur-
niture Company between Nov. 14, 1988 and June 15, £989.

The Ultara I child restraint, model #420, has a swing-over
arm bar that fastens by a push-button buckle. Testing by
Evenflo revealed that the latch plate, which snaps into the
buckle, will bend in a serious motor vehicte collision and, as
a result, the force required to undo the buckle after crash
exceeds that which is allowed under Canadian safety stand-
ards.

This constitutes a safety-related defect. In an accident sit-
uation it may be difficult to undo the buckle and get a child
out of the restraint.

Repair kits, consisting of a new harness, tongue assembly,
release-button shield plate and installation instructions, are
available free of charge from Evenflo.

Anyone owning an Ultara I child car seat should im-
mediately:

1) Check the statement of compliance label on the back of
the restraint and identify the model number and date of
manufacture.

2) If the restraint is model #420, manufactured between
Nov. 14, 1988 end June i5, 1989, contact Evenflo for a
repair kit to replace the defective parts. Evenfio’s toll free
line is 1-800-265-0749 and their address is: Evenflo Juvenile
Furniture Company, P.O. Box 1598, 11 Bodine Drive,
Brantforc, Ontario, N3Y 37.

All Uhara J car seats made after June 15, 198%, have
buckles which meet the safety standard. To date, no acci-
denis have been reporied which could have been attributed to
the buckle release problem.

The Uliara 11, mode! #421, with a T shield, is not affected
by this pubtic notice.
