Open discussion group on getting better ac- quainted with God meets Mondays at Mild exercises in water are a good fitness start IF YOU haven't exercised in a while and are a little hesitant to start, recCenire Ron Andrews is offering a program that may be of interest. Designed for beginners, the class is called Mild Aquacises. “Because the aquatic environ- ment eliminates the problems associated with weight-bearing,’’ says instructor Ingrid Baxter, ‘‘the class is perfect for those just beginning a fitness program, or for people with physical difficulties such as arthritis, back pain, and ankle, knee and hip problems.” While emphasizing the fun aspect of fitness, Baxter’s classes provide a whole-body workout. Also included ere fitness and nutrition tips aimed at a holistic, healthy and positive lifestyle. Baxter has a master’s degree in education with emphasis on adap- tive aquatics. She is author of a book and video called Waterways, about the Berinich Centre’s special swim program for children with special needs. For severa: years she was the adaptive aquatics consul- tant for the Vancouver Parks Board. Knowing how to swim is not a prerequisite as the classes are held in the shallow end of the pool. The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. Other mild classes are also available at the recreation centre. For more information on fitness and other leisure-time programs, phone 929-7314.
