what they might encounter inside.

The thought of being stuck in
some awful tunnel gives me the
creeps.

However, sometimes their
discoveries are incredible — con-
sider the Carlsbad Caverns. And,
it’s happened again.

Fourteen years ago, two
spelunkers crawled into a hole in
the ground in Arizona and
discovered a huge series of caverns
said to be more beautiful and
larger than Carlsbad. The incredi-
ble thing is that the secret has been
kept until now.

The reason for secrecy was to
allow the State of Arizona to pur-
chase the land, turn it into a state
park and develop proper access in-
to the caverns.

They’re still at it — and the ex-
act location of the caves is not yet
public knowledge. ‘For security
reasons,” the entrance to the caves
is guarded 24 hours a day.

The entrance to the park has
been announced it will be
roughly 10 miles from the small
town on Benson, Arizona which is
on Interstate 10, near Tombstone.

The original owners of the
property, a family named Kart-
chner, were the first people the
spelunkers contacted.

Instead of attempting to develop
the property themselves — and
probably making millions in the
process, they contacted the
Arizona government and arranged
the sale of the land befow the cur-
rent market price.

For this reason the park will be
called Kartchner State Park.

There is no definite date for the
opening, but any visitors to
Arizona should check it out. It
would be unfortunate to miss see-
ing what might become one of the
scenic ‘‘wonders of the world’’.

Also in the area, the old railway
linking Tombstone and Bisbee
(near the Mexican border) is
scheduled to resume operation ear-
ly in 1989.

They are planning to use vintage
cars and pull the train with an old
steam engine that has been con-
verted to oil — ail the stuff of the
past without cind*rs in your eyes.

Bisbee is an interesting little
town — site of the world’s largest
open-pit copper mine.

It’s high up in the mountains
and has incredibly clean air. You'd
hardly call it a tourist trap, but
they do get a small number of
“snowbirds”’ fleeing the Canadian
winters. These, I was told, enter
into the town projects — service
clubs and the like en-
thusiastically and are considered
more as residents than visitors.

Another attraction of Bisbee is
the closeness to the Mexican
border. Visitors can pop across the
line regularly to refuel — both
their cars and their liquor cabinets
—- at great savings.

One of the big attractions in
Bisbee is the Copper Queen Hotel
— restored from the 1800s.

They rent rooms -~ if you ever
consider staying there make sure
you don’t get a room over the
“saloon”? part of the hotel. I’m
told it gets fairly noisy on a regular
basis.

I hesitate to recommend the
food at the hotel because it’s been
several years since we visited. At
that time it was good, but restau-
rants can change overnight.
