Masters swimmers break records SEYMOUR RAPIDS Masters Swim Team members broke Cana- dian and world records in various events at the recently completed Canadian Masters Swimming Championships. Twenty-six swimmers from the team, which is based at Ron An- drews Community Centre, par- ticipated in the swim meet held at UBC. Approximately 700. athletes from England, the U.S. and all parts of Canada and Mexico com- peted in the event. Highlights of the meet included the six world record performance by Patricia Gilmore and world re- cord performances by several relays. Gilmore established world and Canadian records in the 50-metre freestyle, 100-metre backstroke, 200-metre backstroke, 100-metre butterfly, 200-metre individual medley, and 400-metre individual medley. Mike Price, Rob Barton, Gilmore, and Diane Phillips established new Canadian and world records in the 200-metre mixed freestyle relay and the 200-metre mixed medley relay. Other highlights included Cruise establishing a new Canadian re- cord in the 50-metre breaststroke, which was remarkable because he had a broken toe at the time. Most swimmers established per- sonal best times in the events that they swam. North Van started a rally in the sixth but fell short 5-3. s In the semi-final, North Van Central/Lynn Valley pitcher Mike & Earland pitched a one-hitter and knocked out the Forest Hills/ Highlands team 7-2. Tony Foster threw a respectable four-hitter for Forest Hills.
