Arthritis Society honored by therapists THE CANADIAN Association of Occupational Therapists recently honored the Arthritis Socicty's B.C. and Yukon division with a citation in recognition of its 40 years of substantial support for the development of rehabilitation ser- vices in British Columbia. Arthritis, which is Canada’s most common chronic disease, is treated with a carefully-prescribed combination of drugs, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Occupational therapy helps people whose joints have heen damaged by disease to cope more easily in their home and work environments. In communities all across B.C., treatment programs and self-help aids designed and developed by Arthritis Socicty occupational therapists have helped thousands of arthritis sufferers lead indepen- dent, productive lives. There are arthritis centres or specific treatment units in Van- couver, Victoria, Penticton and Cranbrook. The society also coo- perates with more than 50 com- munity hospitals throughout the province by training and updating those hospitals’ therapists in specific arthritis treatment tech- niques. In areas without therapists, the society provides outreach services with a travelling workshop-on- wheels. The occupational thera- pists’ van, staffed by therapists from Vancouver's Arthritis Cen- tre, travels regularly to these areas, providing splints and self-help aids to arthritis patients whu have been referred by their family doctors or rheumatologists. The Arthritis Society has pro- vided treatment for arthritis pa- tients in B.C. since 1947, Today, there are more than 320,000 people with arthritis in the province. For many of those people, the efforts of the society’s specially-trained occupational therapists have made life with a chronic disease very much easier to bear.
