growing season,

deciduous (currently naked)
trees and shrubs.

We have all enjoyed a relatively
mild winter (touch wood), which
means we must compiete these
tasks soon, before the arrival of
spring’s new growth.

As a general rule,there are two
main methods of pruning
deciduous (there they go, dropping
their leaves again) plants. Heading
back, which creates dense, com-
pact growth on fast growers, and
thinning, which produces cpen,
vase-shaped growth on those which
are slower, I stress that this is an
over-simplification, but it will be
helpful in deciding what to do until
you've learned the specific pruning
techniques for your own species
and varieties of trees and shrubs.

Heading hack is used at this time
to control the growth and shape of
deciduous hedges such as privet,
barberry, quince, etc. It is also
practiced on winter or early spring,
flowering shrubs after they have
finished blooming; viburnum bod-

by removing the old growth back
to a point of manageable size
and/or to a specific shape.

Thinning is the main method in-
volved when pruning shade trees,
fruit trees, and some of the flower-
ing shrubs such as roses.

When thinning, remove weak or
damaged growth, or that which is
growing through the centre of the

. branching structure.

Remember, we are trying to
promote open, vase-shaped
growth, so look for an outward
facing leaf bud near the point at
which the cut is planned; then
make the cut about inch beyond
it.

If you are pruning roses, wait
until the new growth is about '4-
inch long. If they are pruned too
early, some of the lower buds will
be forced to grow, and, if these are
killed by a late, hard frost, there
will be few or none to take their
place.

the District of North Vancouver
Parks Department on the first
Saturday in March at the
Maplewood Farm.
