62 - Friday, January 17, 1986 - North Shore News Entertainment THOSE RUSSIAN dancers surrre got rhythm. Yup, no doubt about it, say what you want about them commies, guys like Mikhail Baryshnikov do arite pretty piroutte. Yup, no doubt about it, U.S. director Taylor Hackford surrre got rocks in his head. Ya see, when Hackford made White Nights, he thought his only audience would be lead heads like himself. With that ‘premise in mind, Hackford delivered us a film ‘full of racial slurs, mindless sterotyping of na- tionalities and a cast that can’t act. In short, White Nights is a black mark for everyone involved. Nikolai Rodchenko (Mikhail Baryshnikov) is adored and honored by the cultured crowds that flock to his ballet performances. The Soviet defector has it made on the world stage. Only a sudden twist of fate sends him back into Russia when his jet flight ends in a crash landing deep inside Siberia. Identified by Coionel Chaiko (Jerzy Skolimowski) of the KGB, Rodchenko is arrested and held prisoner. Chaiko, a cunning, evil cliche of a character, plans .to use an American defector to persuade Rodchenko to “return to the Russian stage. The U.S. deserter is a black tap dancer called Raymond Greenwood (Gregory Hines). Greenwood defected to Russia to escape the prejudice and hatred in his own country. Chaiko of- fers Raymond and his Soviet wife (Isabella Rossellini) a chance te leave. the. tiny Siberian theatre they work in for the warmth of Moscow if they persuede Rodchenko to dance. Director Hackford offers us a sobbing, black tap dancer who relates his bitter life in the U.S. while shuffl- ing through a tap routine. He offers us a snarly Rus- sian dancer graceful on his toes but clumsy with his lines. He shows us just how stupid all KGB agents are and how easy it is for crafty . American agents to cutthink them. The film’s only saving graces are the shoe-sizzling .dance routines performed by Baryshnikov and Hines set to a jazzy soundtrack blasted out of a ghetto blaster. One can only guess at the social comment attached to the ever-present ghetto blaster during Hine’s dance numbers. Together, Nikolai and Raymond plot to escape into the safety of the American embassy in Moscow. Guess what? They make it, Whar could have been a fast-paced thriller turned out -te be a slow, corny piece of propaganda. Director Heackford should not expect to take a bow for this show. White Nights is now play- ing at Oakridge, Vogue, West Van, Scott 72, Co- quitlam and Dolphin.
