14 - Wednesday, July 10, 1985 - North Shore News Sports Columbus sails over Colts VANCOUVER COLUM- BUS blanked North Shore Colts 2-0 Sunday night to raise their league-leading point total to 26, The two teams fought to a scoreless first half draw in front of approximately 350 fans at Kinsmen Stadium. In the second half, however, striker Gary Clark, who scored the winning goal for Columbus in their 1-0 vic- tary over the Colts June 20, dribbled his way back to haunt the locals with a pair of shots that beat Colts’ goal-keeper Chris Melanidis. Both goals were hotly disputed by Colts" coach Frank Pike, whe later said officiating at the game was terrible: ‘‘both goals were scored on offside plays that were blantantiy offside to everyone but the linesman."” Pike said after the game that the Colts organization is looking into strengthening the various weaknesses that have become apparent with the recent poor showing of the club. “We will be bringing in players, iocally and other- wise, within the next week,”’ said Pike. The win put Colurnbus five points up on second place New Westminster Queens Park Rangers, who whipped Nanaimo Clippers 4-0 Sunday, and twelve points up on the Colts, now in third place with 14 points. Columbus keeper, Dino Alberti, racked up his sev- enth shut-out of the season in the Sunday game. Langley outbowls West Van WEST YAN Cricket Club won the toss in June 30 cricket action and asked to bat first against Langley but lost the game. Tony Smith (49) and Reg Firth (15) thrashed the early Langley bowling. Keith Gardiner (14) and Bob Gardner (22) continued the rout until 107 runs had been scored. Steve Milbourn (2 for 34) and Basil Statia (4 for 14) then shattered Langley's resistance. They were all out for 127 runs. New volieyball coach for Clan DELBROOK COMMUNI- TY sport instructor, Petr Neveklovsky has been ap- pointed to the position of Head Coach of the Simon Fraser University Women’s Vollyball Team. Neveklovsky’s impressive credentials include a Master’s degree in Physical Education from Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He was most recently the head coach for the U.B.C. Thunderbird Women’s. Vollyball Team and the B.C. Olympic MMen’s AA Team which placed third in this year’s Canadian AA Championship. in a variety of sports which include coaching as an assis- tant coach with the Czechoslovakia Men's Na- tional Volleyball Team and his work as a head Coach of the Czechoslovakian Volleyball Federation through the period of two Olympic Games and two World Volleyball Champi- onships. In 1983, Neveklovsky was named as a Canadian Coach of the Year by C.C.A.A. Neveklovsky is looking forward to building upon the very successful varsity pro- gram at Simon Fraser which until recently was coached West Van's fielding was at its best with no catches dropped. West Van started cautiously when batting se- cond. Statia (10) and Levy (38) mastered Langiey bowl- ing but wickets started to fall. West Van seemed poised for victory, but Keith Gar- diner (4 for 33) and Tony Smith (2 for 27) destroyed the locals’ expectations. West Van were all out for 121 runs, six short of Langley's toial.
