She emphasizes that design school can’t teach a person to design but that it must come from within. **it’s not all glamor. | went through that. If you respect people you work with, then they'll help you when you need them.’’ During the design school training, Fawkes said she would ‘‘eat, breath and sleep fashion.”” And when = she graduated, it was ‘‘a culture shock. “After reality hits, you realize the fabrics aren't cheap, so you learn to buy the mght amounts in the right seasons. With fashion shows you're always deciding which to take and which to tum down. You have to be selec- tive about clients. People want deals, but you have to. cover costs. I’m a business woman.”’ 1 But Fawkes seems to have caught on quickly for her two years in the business. She knows what she wants to achieve from her designing, and that is ‘‘beautiful clothes for men and women, that look good, have quality and are affordable."’ She con- siders herself a West Coast designer, whose styles are ‘‘simple, elegant and contem- porary."’ And her favorite fabrics to work with are cot- tons, silks and hghtweight wools.
