C6 - Friday, April 27, 1984 - North Shore News GE entertainment Problems beset Hot L Baltimore But it’s still a good show THE HOT L Baltimore, written by Lanford Wilson, is a play about people. The entire show takes place ‘‘.... in the lobby of a once elegant, but soon to be demohished hotel, where a varied cast of characters reveals the essence of their lives in a twenty-four hour penod that incorporates love, lust, hysteria, hope, vy resignation. The preceding sentence 1s taken directly from the press disappointment and Lambert, who was pertect in the role of April Green, an By DECLAN McMANLUS beaten younger brother ot Jackie (Maureen Robinson), and Merran Fahtman as the girl, who was onstage for almost the entire” perfor- mance. Other standouts were Bernard Blumer and Maureen Robinson. This production was also graced by a particularly good set award at the North Shore Drama Festival for his work on Ring Around the Moon, the set was perfect for giving the impression of an old, run- down hotel. The = surroun- dings certainly give the actors something to work with. ~ First impression’s production of The Hor L Balumore will be running at release of the First Impres- aging, cynical prostitute, sions production of The Hot Shaun Garvey, the brow- | Baltunore, which opened up at Presentation House on Thursday, April 19) The ac- tual production, on the other hand, does not quite live up to this deseription. This does not, however, mean that the show was poor, as il was very enjoyable, but there were some problems The main flaw with this production seemed to be a general lack of movement within each act, the world movement tn this case mean- ing a sense of direction. The play lacked a sense of starting at a certain Jevel, and building to a new point. As a result of this, the show hada - very static feel, remaining at the same level for long penods of tume. This was particularly noticeable at the end of each act, when the lights would come down at a point where nothing impor- tant seemed to have occur- red. Often, the audience was in a certain amount of confu- sion as to whether or not the act had actually ended or not The worse case of this was al the ending, where the play appeared to stop in the mid die of nowhere Another problem with the production was in the way the characters related to one another While each of the characters were well defined within themselves, there was often some contusion as to how they were involved with cach other An example of this is in the relabonship bet ween Bill Lewis, the clerk oft the hotel, amd the girl, oa young call girl Towards the end of the show) it seems Bill INS supposed to feel some at traction for her but othis set Designed by Philip Presentation House to May Gowland, who won the best 12, Wednesday to Saturday. comes aS a surprise to the au hence owt utah rtoas ovat tually stated outright, have no adea that Chis is pownp on In all fairness 4 Certain amountof blarie bor thas bach ee ya setiptatsedt whith otter att Poon PW cote Cr Nab Eben ba Loe apricot at cote Len thre ease oF BW and the port therm tars H2 *154 °164°206 “122 serve opether taken yobs peor Ud as fawn acarthee ss capemaatl ys bound co cgaraat “ps sean amr at VANCOUVER, vANCOUVER, VANCOUVER) VANCOUVER/ \ANCOUVER/ aPtaeditc oe aoth reodte : . . . i.
