It’s called a neigh-
borhood pub but the

‘neighbors feel less than

neighborly towards it.
And the idea of
granting longer
opening hours to North
Vancouver’s . Queens
Cross has got some of

the neighbors hopping

mad.

Several of them are ex-
pected to turn out to voice
their objections tomorrow
(Monday) at 7:30 p.m. when
North Van District council

‘hold an information night to

discuss _ the proposal of
extending the pub's hours.

As of last week, 315
people from about 150
households within a 350 ft.
radius of the pub had signed
a petition in opposition to
longer pub hours.

The man who started the
petition, Ray Gainer, who

_lives at 150 West Queens,

says he had a maximum of
five refusals from neighbors
he approached to sign.

He claims he found most
of them sick and. tired of
noise and parking problems
they feel are caused by the
pub even during the present
Opening times.

“There are a lot of very
very upset people on this
petition,” he says.

While he was canvassing
for signatures, he says,
neighbors made the point
that they do not even

consider it a neighborhood
ub.

says. “It’s more for singles
than a family person like
myself.

number. of local peoplé who

has a petition, hanging on
the bar wall, which has many
signatures of people
declaring they are in favor of
the pub staying open until 1
a.m.

Gainer maintains that
whereas there may be many
Signatures, his own petition
is of far greater relevance as
it is strictly limited to within
the 350 metre boundary of
the pub - the area council
originally defined as being the
“neighborhood” of the
neighborhood pub. .

But whichever side has the
most support, it is clear
many people feel quite
emotional about =~ the
question of the Queens Cross
hours and council may find
itself confronted by strongly
divided opinions when it
discusses the matter
tomorrow.
