Peter » ‘Mellen. as: a’ man. - whose ideasdo not: sit well i in| more conventional - circles: : He is the author of “Land-.: 3 marks of Canadian Art, (McClelland and Stewart, $50), which: is somehow: more than, just any ordinary. coffee table book. “y felt like a . student when I wrote it because everything in it represents: my own -_ process: of discovery of our - . renarkable past,’ “he says. A Jot’ .of ‘people say that Canadian -art. starts . with : _ Cornelius. ‘Krieghoff ~ and . - ends. with ‘the Group of Seven. And most would’ be ~ ‘astonished to find out that‘it- goes back 2,000 years and — includes several. othe art forms besides painting.” The book contains 116 works that are considered landmarks in the development of art in this country. As well as the 19th — and 20th centuries, prehistoric art of the Inuit and Indian, as well as religious works from Quebec in the 16th, 17th and 18th ° centuries are ~~ included: Mellen’s -book has to be the most complete compilation of all forms of Canadian art ever. “With this book I'm trying - to show people who know. little about art how exciting it can be to discover more about it, as well as help those who feel they already know about art experience a greater awareness,” says Mellen. Mellen’ s broad attitude to his subject is partly due to his experience teaching history of Canadian art in Toronto where he became — “frustrated at how suf- focating academia is”. “So many students come to university ready and open to learn and discover it all, and they too often end up disillusioned and discouraged,” he says. So he has left to form. an in- dependant film company with his wife. The fact now that film making is integral with his perception of art is as open as the fact ‘that Mellen was extremely impressed by what Kenneth Clark did with film and art in his “Civilization” series. His love of art and film is evident in the book's make-up. The book unfolds like a movie. Each reproduction leads on to the next as the. reader advances, and .subsequently forgets that he is being educated with details and facts. The book becomes an experience rather than ‘a * learned encounter. S.0.P.
