Re: The Cape Breton project.

In response co MP Ted White's comments regarding
the Victory Ships and the Cape Breton project.

After participating in many heritage events in the city
and throughout the North Shore, T think it is amazing
that anyone with any interest in the cultural heritage of
North Vancouver could discount the importance and

. impact of shipbuilding and in particular the Victory Ships
to North Shore and Canadian heritage.

know strongly support the idca of moving those parts of the

Coastal Council to BC
Ferries.

T have followed the devel-
opment, trials and tribula-
tions of this Crown <orpora-
tion as member of the afore-
mentioned committees -for
the last 10 years.

The corporation has lis-
tened to the people in
Horseshoe Bay contrary to
your claim: the corporation,
because of the protest, aban-

the planned works yard from
the former BC Rail property
to the head of the terminal,

increase of cost and because
of the protest.

The moving of the

Island, as suggested by West
Vancouver planners, is
absolutely irresponsible.

If we want another major
environmental hotspot, that
is the very place.

Let’s not forget that this
terminal is at the end of a
major highway.

The provincial govern-
ment in reversing its think-
ing has declared the BC ferry
routes an extension of the
highway system and is in
essence funded with the
Provincial fuel tax.

At the meeting, pollution
was mentioned by one speak-
er, That is a very real concern
not only ia Horseshoe Bay
but also at the Bowen Island
terminal. It should be
addressed by the corpora-
tion, perhaps by rigorously
enforcing a no-enginc-idling
law as it is already in force in
some European countries.

Also of concern is the
claim of one property owner
adjacent to the terminal that

~ he would look at a wall a few

feet from his window. °

Under the new regime at

the corporation some atti-
tudes towards public consul-
tation have changed, new
and more open- -minded peo-
ple have been drawn into the
corporation. The corporate
culture is slowly changing.
