The Heritage Achievement Award of Honour was awarded to Roy Pallant. Pallant moved to the city from England 40 years ago, and brought with him a passion for history. Pallant loves to share his extensive knowledge of the his- tory of both the City and District of North Vancouver with residents of all ages. He takes school children on histor- ical walks and talks to senior citizen groups. He also helped develop pamphlets for seven self-guided historical walking, tours in the district. It’s much more than | expected because what 1 do gives me great joy.” The Fra Morale Heritage Improvement | Award = of Honour went to Scott and Valerie Burkett for the seven year restoration project of their home at 121] East 27th St. Last year the couple won for their work on the exterior of the house, and this year they were awarded the first ever prize for an interior. Valerie Burkett said she did the research, design and finish- ing of the project, while hus- band Scott did the construc- tion, wiring and plumbing. Burkett restores. fine art object and said, “I looked at it (the house) as a big, giant antique that needed restoring.” She was so determined to restore the house.as close to its .. original state as possible, that she even tracked down people who had lived in it in the 1940s. The house, cirea 1917, had undergone a remodelling in the 1950s. ; To restore it, the couple raised the ceiling to its original height, and found a staircase railing and exposed: original’ ~ - moulding it: the process.
