8 - Sunday, February 7, 1999 - North Shore News Intercoms protect your home sound THE number of home invasions seems to be steadily increasing. Recently, some homeown- ers have been tricked because the criminals have cold them it is the police and to open the door. If you find yourself in the same situation and have any doubts aboue who is at your door call 9-1-1 and tell the operator you want to confirm that police officers are at your house. All police officers carry an identification card with their name, picture and the name of the police force. This is shown in conjunc- tion with a metal badge which says “police” and the name of the force. It may also have their rank (constable) and/or their badge number. Don’t be fooled by badges that say security police or spe- cial officer. Another trick that was used is the mailman-with- a-delivery-for-you ploy. People are excited to be ’ getting 2 package so most would be tempted to open the docr. If you are not expecting anything ask who the parcel is addressed to and who the sender is before opening the door, unless of course you know the letter carrier. If the information doesn’t add up then don’t open the door. You can always refuse delivery and pick up the par- cel later at a postal outlet. Other occupations that crooks will try to impersonate are BC Tel and Hydro work- ers, municipal works, cablevi- » sion employees and couricr drivers. If you have any doubts about the credentials ask to see their- company identifica- tion which has a picture on it. If you still are not satisfied then call the company and ask if they have dispatched an employee to your house. .f they do not know what you sre talking about you should call the police right away and tell them what hap- pened and give them all the informaiion you can. ’ One wis to | prevent . thieves hoi 2 sing into your house is to instal: un intercom - system at the front dvor. If someone comes to your door that you don’r know, you can talk to them and find y out what they want without * opening your door. "This does two things for you. If a criminal wants to get in your house by having you open the door you've got him. If a burglar is calling to see if you are home before trying to break in you’ve cov- ered that as well. Stay safe.
