Raindrops keep falling out of AT the turn of a tap, we receive one of the world’s most precious resources. Most of us rarely think about where our drinking weter comes from or how we can help ensure its quality. The journey begins with the mountain rivers, creeks and streams high up in Greater Vancouver's three watersheds — Capilano, Sevmour and Coquitiam — located on the North Shore. These watersheds are pro- tected lands. Access is strictly limited to safeguard our region’s water supply from human contamination, polu- tion resulting trom) develop. ment and fire hazards. Covering 58,500 hectares, these vast forested areas include six mountain storage lakes that collect the rvnfall and snowmelt flowing from the mountains. From these lakes, the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) distributes water to 18 municipalities via an immense network of: six dams, 22 distribution system reservoirs, 15 pumping. sta- nons and 500 kilometres of water pipes. before it leaves the water sheds, water is treated with chlorine to reduce bacteria lev els. Using chlorine is only one of several ways to protect water quali. The GVRD's Drinking Water Treatment Program will add = more options to improve guality over the next few vears. New treatment facilities will be operating later this year. They include an upgrade of the chlorine primary disin- tection station at the Seymour water source and five new sec- ondary disinfection stations in the region. Future planned improve- ments include ozone disintee- ton at othe Capilano and Coquitlam sources and corre: sion control. Municipalities are responsi- ble for distributing water to the homes and businesses within their borders. They flush and clean the water pipes, and circulate water in local reservoirs. As water continues its path towards a kome or business, a control centre in) Burnaby moniters the condition of more than 5,000 points along the way. Municipalities and the GVRD share this information to help ensure a continuous, Friday. A new system of Pipes, pumping stations and reservoirs will provide water to serve the growing population in south Surrey, Langley Township and Langley City. The project is cost-shared with these municipalities, and will be complete this spring. The second project is an all land-based system of pipes and pumping stations extending from Coquitlam through New Westminster and Burnaby to the Lith Mountain Reservoir in Vancouver. When complete our taps in the fall of 1999, the system will provide a reliable backup and enable the transter of large quantities of water berween sources in cither direction.
