McCredie ~ INQUIRING REPORTER IF YOU get caught with your hand in a Blue Box recycling bin in North Vancouver District, it’s going to cost you $50. At the Monday, Feb. 8, district council meeting, counciilors voted in favor of amending the district’s Waste Removal Bylaw to make such ‘‘scaveng- ing’”’ a ticketing offence. West Vancouver District cur- rently has a similar bylaw on its books. North Van- couver City does not. North Vancouver District Coun. Joan Gadsby voted for the amendment partly because she believed it was the district’s responsibility to protect the Blue Box material under the terms of the district’s contract with International Paper Industries Ltd., the company responsible for collecting Blue Box material. TO The Provincial Government Ministry of Health has decided to close Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver (The Vancouver Sun, Feb. 11, 1993). ; This decision was made unilaterally and irresponsibly without consultation with the hospital administration, - the physicians, the health care workers, the community leaders, or most importantly, with you, the patients. i You know that Shaughnessy Hospital has provided quality health care services to the Vancouver community —— - for decades but how do you quantify the intangibles, the friendly atmosphere, the warm. caring*--...” environment? It has taken many years for the knowledgable, efficient health care team to evolve at ' Shaughnessy. It is not easily replaced overnight at another location. We believe that this decision has too much impact on patient care to allow it to be made by politicians and bureaucrats in Victoria without input from the health care users and providers of Shaughnessy Hc«.spital. The government has just completed $13 million dollars in renovations at Shaughnessy including a new Spinal Cord Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Operating Rooms, and Women's Health Centre. What happens to these? Where do the 100,000 outpatients who visit Shaughnessy clinics and the 15,000 who require surgical operations each year go? What happens to the critically ill maternity patient at Grace Hospital who requires ICU services? Who cares for the acute spinal cord injured patient? : We urge you, who have personally experienced the friendly, quality health care that Shaughnessy provides, to contact your political leaders and express your concerns today!
