Proud Sponsor of the 18th Annual Coho Festival Salmon and festival goers return to the North Shore As scores of salmon make a silvery dash for our shores, their return to North Shore streams and rivers will be cel- ebrated by hundreds of people flocking to the 18th annual COHO FESTIVAL, Sunday, September 7. .. Theyre lacing up their run- ners for the 14 km Coho Run through West Vancouver, across to Vancouver and back, or the more leisurely 8km Coho Walk beside the Capilano Ri .. They re lining up to breathe in the perfume of barbecued salmon, pre- pared by junior and celebri- ty chefs... ..They’re looking for spots to sit and enjoy a program of entertainment at Ambleside Park. From what was just the germ of an idea by the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and local business community, 15 years ago, the Coho Festival has now become a true North P “ Shore tradition - and the longest running annual festival on this side of the water. Celcbrating the return of the salmon is also a mark of appreciation for this precious and fragil: miracle. Funds raised during festival events, including the Student Tag Day (Saturday. September 6) at North Vancouver and West Vancouver shopping malls, are used year-round to protect and repair our salmon streams, raise salmon fry for children to release into the water and to educate ail of us through dis plays, hatcheries and school programs. Last year, the Coho Festivai Society of the North Shore raised $13,500 which was distributed to numerous differ- ent schools and organizations. “We hope to double that amount this year,” says Coho Festival Co-Chair Rick Amanitea. How? To start, the Pacific Salmon Foundation will match many of next year’s Coho Festival grants. Then. new this year is a fundraising package tailored to families and busi- nesses, featuring a PROCLA- MATION signed by all three North Shore mayors and chiefs of the Squamish and Burrard Bands. The package also includes the native-arti- san-designed Coho Festival t- shirt, which has become a col- lector’s item. Assembled at different donation levels (start- ing at $75), with a tax receipt, the proclamation packet will be a great gift for the hard-to-buy-for. It also offers an opportunity to make a meaningful contribu- tion to salmonid enhancement on the North Shore. The Coho Festival is already being ushered in by displays of children's artwork in local malls. The main kick-off will occur 7 p.m., Wednesday, September 3, at the 1997 Coho Festival Reception at the Squamish Nation Recreation Centre, 100 Capilano Road. Tickets avail- able for $15 at Park Royal Shopping Centre concierge desks (North 925-9576, South 925-9547) West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, 926-6614, and North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, 987-4488.
