SIXTY-SOME years
ago a barn-storming
pilot to become known
as Wrong-way Corrigan
took off from here for
Los Angeles but landed
many hours later in
Treland.

Corrigan came to mind
the other Friday as Cathay
Pacific flight CX 888 left
Vancouver not for Hong
Kong, the direction i associ-
ate with CX, but for New
York. So who wants to go to
New York from Vancouver!

I sat in business class
beside a type-A New Yorker
who complained that he had
not been able to get a seat in
first class. Yeah, I know the
feeling, but gamely slugged
on my champagne, forced

dozed off in the armchair CX

Ina little over four hours
we were there; either we had
blistering tail-winds or the
pilot had a hor date in
Manhattan.

First impressions are not
the best, certainly not after
leaving Vancouver's shiny
new airport. JFK is a congest-
ed dump and if working
there is not a lot of fun, it
shows.

was more than that, it was

I found enough exhilara-
tion in onc night to wipe the
smile off a smug I-Love-
Vancouver t-shirt.

And the people were
great. New Yorkers expect
the best and they want it
first, whether it’s art galleries,
Broadway or shopping.
Eating out is a passion and to
be in yesterday’s restaurant is
death.
