FOUR YOUNG teenagers are on their way to New York City and Europe as winners of the Next Model Search, staged in Capilano Mall last Saturday, Aug. 27, and a West Vancou- ver teen is among them. By Carol Crenna Contributing Writer The contest was staged by Lizbell Model Management and NEXT Models from New York City. Though three winners were origi- nally to be awarded contracts totalling $150,000, the event was sc successful —- with between 600 and 800 girls. responding from as far away as the Sunshine Coast, the Kootenays and Vancouver Island — it was decided that four contracts would be awarded. Liz Bell, former model and owner of Lizbell agency. said: ‘The NEXT agents and those from Karins Models in Paris and Fashion Models in Milan were thrilled. They were particularly impressed with the cali- bre of girls they saw. “They were very fussy, probably because this was an unusual contest in which the girls didn’t just go from winning a preliminary event to finals, they were given contracts right away.” Bell added that there were many beautiful girls at the contest who were not chosen by NEXT, but some will be taken into her agency because they have potential to work internationally, particularly in Japan. What was NEXT looking for? The agents were looking for “diamonds in the rough,” according to Bell. They seek what is referred to in the industry as the “X Factor,” a certain star quality and spark. Girls also have to have full lips, beautiful skin, good proportions and height. It is a total package. WEST VANCOUVER’S Christina Wilson... model search winner. Bell said that height was not a major factor in this search for girls between 13 and 18. “We didn’t have a height requirernent because when a girl is 13 years old and growing like a weed, you can’t nile out any- thing.” All of the chosen girls were 5’8” or taller, however. Bell singled out a very young girl in the lineup prior to the competi- tion, 14-year-old Allia Janes of Burnaby, who is 5°84”. “I knew she would be great, but she said she couldn’t stay because she had taken a job at the PNE mak- ing french fries to pay for her course at a local modeling school,” said Bell. “We told her she didn’t need lessons and we would pay the bal- ance on what she owed. She then said she couldn’t come to the actual {> ONALLFULL PRICE event because she was scheduled to make fries, but we convinced her that it would be worth her while to take the day off work.” Janes was given a $25,000 con- tract. Bell said she had met the other winner of a $25,000 contract, 16- year-old Renée Janssen, from Port Moody, while she was shopping downtown at The Gap. Bell said she knew Janssen had the look that the agents like. The teen told her she would be away on holidays during the event, so Bell asked her to come back from holi- days early, and Janssen was awarded a contract. She is 5°8", “with a great smile and wonderful eyes,” said Bell. See Contracts page 17 vel?
