10 - Sunday, February 6, 1994 ~ North Shore News EVER GET the feeling you're being watched? Last month a group of Lions Bay residents banded together and formed a road safety program — 99 Watch — in an effort to curb reckfess drivers on Highway 99, The volunteers, who are trained by. the RCMP, watch for and report dan- gerous drivers to police, and then follow through by poing to court and making sure the drivers are prosecuted. Although this type of highway surveillance has undertones of Big Brother, members of 99 Watch insist itis not a vigi- lante group, The citizens involved are not taking the law into their own hands, they're just informants who are step- ping forward as witnesses. The aim of the program is to rid the community of maniacs who drive at excessive speed, pass on blind corners, and endanger the lives of everyone on the road. Zero tolerance is the only way to put the brakes on these menaces to society, Do you agree with citizens reporting reckless drivers to police?
