While the |.8-litre engine re- mained the same, just about everything else was revised or changed, including the name. The car was now rebadged as a 318i. With a modern shape and a teutonic, ‘“‘tight’’ look, the elegant 318i became one of the most desirable yupmobiles once again, further increasing the gap between it and the competitors. The.second generation Beemer was slightly shorter and wider, with a longer wheelbase and wheel track which increased the stability of the vehicle. The new 1984 318i’s base price climbed to $18,740 — a few . thousand dollars more than the predecessor’s price tag. Still, the new yupmobile did very well in the market. In the following year, a four- door model was added, along with a much peppier six-cylinder model, the 325e. Sporting a 121 horsepower output, the 325e ac- celerated like no other 3-series in history. In order to focus more on lux- ury car buyers, BMW dropped the affordable 318i in 1986, leaving only the 2.7-litre 325¢ models. A year later, BMW introduced a fabulous convertible model, powered by an extremely energetic 168 horsepower 2.5-litre six- cylinder engine. The same torquey engine was made standard on the . 325i models, while the less pow- erful, carry-over 2:7-litre engine (121 horses) became part of the cheaper 325 two-door and four- door sedans. In 1988, a few interesting vehi- cles joined the still popular 3- series line-up. For the ski-lovers, BMW in- troduced the full-time four-wheel 325ix sedan, And for race-car lovers, BMW brought the super- machine M3, equipped with a 2.3-litre DOHC engine capable of cranking out a whopping 192 horsepower. However, with a steep price tag of $44,300 and $54,000, respec- tively, the two niche-oriented vehicles were no longer entry level models. When the value-conscious 90s generation started buying cheaper Japanese sports coupes, BMW responded with a more affordable, $25,000 318i sedan and 318is coupe in the’ 190 model year, equipped with smooth-revving 16-valve 1.8-litre engines. In 1992, BMW launched the all-new third generation 325i : sedans. Larger in just about every dimension, the new 3-series boasted new levels of refinement, smoothness, performance, and features, all wrapped up inside a much sof ter and more aggressive body shape.- Its outstanding overall perfor- mance earned it the ‘Car of the Year’’ award from the Automobile Journalists’ Associa- tion of Canada, as well as numerous other awards. At the end of the year, two coupe models (318is and 325is) and one entry level sedan (318i} were added to the lineup. Last year, BMW introduced the 320i sedan, priced at $31,700 — right in between the 318i and the 325i. The 2.0-litre six-cylinder engine in the 320i is unique in that it is not offered in the U.S. mar- ket. As if all these changes were not enough, BMW brought more sur- prises this year by bringing the wonderful convertible version of the third generation 325i, anda potent limited pretuction M3 coupe. The Cabriolet features a power-operated soft-top, dual airbags, 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine, and Rollover Protection System (RPS). — The limited edition M3 model is unique to the Canadian market, and all 45 cars being allocated here are pre-sold. The $60,000 price tag certainly isn’t cheap, but its zero-to-hundred time of just six seconds, and phenomenal cor- nering ability, make this car much more than just a good looking sports coupe. {t’s one of the few sports cars in the world that can carry adult passengers in the back seat com- fortably. With the 3-series, BMW has shown that a sports car and prac- tical sedan can indeed co-exist as one vehicle. ‘93 TROOPER ‘LS’ The ultimate all season performer, includes air, cond., AM/EM cas: . sete, P/W, P/L, P/M, tilt steering, 190 HP DOHC V6, rear anti- lock brakes, tu-tone paint, and loads more as standard equipment.
