A 22-YEAR-OLD Lions Bay man saved the life of a 39-
year-old West Vancouver man trapped in a burning sports

car on Thursday.

first thing that hit-me was just this

had crashed into a ditch at the
side of the highway.

Flames were licking through the
front hood, the front wheels of
the vehicle were burning and
sparks and fire sprayed from the
exhaust pipe.

“He said, ‘This is going to
blow.” And 1 said, ‘Yeah, you're
right?"

But Gienger said the driver, of
the crashed Mercedes was nowhere
to be seen.

He instinctively ran to the burn-
ing car.

“Ar that point | just ran into
the smoke. It's a decision vou
make ..., you can’t really say it’s
right or wrong. Either you-get in-
volved or you don’t,"’ he said.

Gienger scrambled down the
embankment and entered the car.

He was blinded by the smoke
pouring from the engine com-
parunent.

“f could feel him (the. driver)
slumped over the steering wheel.

“He was conscious, but he was
very out of it — moaning. 1 said

“He really was very incoherent
and dida't respond,’ Gienger
said.

Three times. he attempted to
pull the man from the burning
car,

“4 could lift his body weight,
but I couldn't get his tegs out. |
guess | panicked for a second.

“T thought this is crazy, this is
nuts, this thing is going to go for
sure. Just at that point the other
fellow came. through. the smnoke
and came right up to the side of
