THE SEVILLE'S Photo submitied “Northstar” engine produces a whopping 295- horsepower, yet achieves a fuet economy that is more than 25% beiter than the larger 5.7-litve V8 from 17 years ago. Northstar V8 propels car in refined fashion From page 35 litre V8 from 17 years ago. Although the first generation Seville had more than its share of electrical and mechanical prob- Jems, the car was‘ exclusive and unique enough that it was at one time considered to be a collector’ s item-by some car buffs. Even GM's rival threatened. Their Lincoln division quickly introduced a direct competitor to the Seville in the'1977 model year. Adorned by tacky add-ons,. the ‘Lincoln Versailles was nothing more than a re-badged Ford Granada, and was eventually dropped three years later due to lacklustre sales. The Seville was - completely ‘revamped for the 1980. model year, gaining a striking style along with.2 modern front-wheel drive layout. The second generation Seville shared its basic platform with.the Cadillac Eldorado, Buick Riviera, and Oldsmobile Toronado. : The new Seville’s size was vir- tually identical to its predecessor, but it now sported a_ radical “*bustle-back”? look, reminiscent of the earlier Rolls-Royce. Chrysler also offered this unusual design in their Imperial model a year after Cadillac, but it soon became obvious that the consumers simply didn’t like the _ weird trunk design that looked as if someone had ‘‘pasted’’ a second trurk on top of the original one. Cadillac made a strange market- ing move for the 1981 models by introducing an innovative, yet troublesome, variable displace- ment V8 that ran on eight, six or four cylinders depending on the driving demands. . The complex six-litre V8 suf- fered from so many problems that Cadillac dropped it after only one year. The 4.1-Ftre V6 and V8 engines ‘that propelled the later Sevilles - Proved much more reliable, but the Sevilte still suffered from un- necessarily high defects, further tamishing GM’s reliability record in the ’80s. The third generation Seville ar- rived in the fal! of 1985 as a 1986 model. Nearly 40 cm shorter, the new Seville still carried the 130- . horsepower, 4.i-litre V8 engine. The °86 Seville looked much cleaner too, thanks to the re- designed body that finally drop- ped the ugly, crippled trunk design of the previous model. As the years passed by, the powerplant grew to a 4.5-litre V8 in ‘88, then to a 4.9-litre in °91, which boasted a respectable 200- horsepower. The biggest and most important change for the Seville, however, came last year when the all-new 1992 Seville hit the showrooms. Ford = felt ’ middle-of-the-road The Seville was no longer the luxury sedan that suffered from GM's look- alike styles of the °80s. With a new handsome body that borrow- ed some styling cues froni the Allante model, Cadillac received unprecedented reviews from critics and juurnaiists everywhere. And for 1993, Seville can now be powered by the previously mentioned, sensational ‘‘North- Star’’engine when you purchase the Touring Sedan model. With a 45% iacrease in horsepower, the addition of a passenger’s ‘Side air- bag, revised rear suspension, and speed-sensitive stecring, Cadillac now has a model that offers absc- lutely world-class features and characteristics. I recently had a chance to drive the new Seville STS, and the car felt just as solid as the Mercedes-Benz’s 400E. sedan, which costs about 50% more. The Northstar ‘V8 felt incredibly torque-y and strong — even at low rpm ranges — and propelled the car in a surprisingly refined fashion. ; The STS now accelerates faster and feels more nimble than many competitors, including the well- Tespected Lexus LS400. Cadillac has also done well in the recent customer satisfaction surveys taken in the U.S: by the influential and powerful J.D. Power and Associates. The quality of many Cadillac models, including the new Seville, has now reached an extremely competitive level — something ihat was considered unachievable by many industry critics only sev- eral years ago. Having seen so much progress from Cadillac, I can’t even imag- ine what they would do with the Next generation Seville, which should arrive in four years.
