A minuscule task THIS ARTICLE is going to upset a few people. But if there’s.a head being turned out there in newspaperland, that’s cooi- because it means someone is thinking about this issue, and how right (possibly) or wrong (never) I am. In the fast 124 years of our na- tion’s history, there‘has clearly been an ever-increasirig influx of minority groups. In the earliest days of this inz-nigration, and un- til quite recently, visible minorities wko came tc. Canada were consid- -ered seconi-class citizens, in a Predominantly white, Christian society. They had limited rights in the plebiscite, they were discriminated against in job selec- tion, their religions were mocked, and they were feared as being ‘ ae people, ‘double agents or the li wo che ” Japanese who came to : Canada before the Second World War. set up businesses, helped the economy and became good, _- honest citizens. But in ‘times of war, they were called upon. to serve with these other “‘Canadians,” and did so with honor, pride and dignity. —- _ Slowly, these people and other minorities were accepted as ‘humans and they have become important parts of. Canadian society. on Politically, many members of minority groups have now become actively involved in both federal and’ provincial politics. For example, in. the last elec- ‘tion, many visible minorities were - “elected to the B.C. legislature — a -will-no-.doubt become a rising “trend; and it is only. a-matter of ‘time’ “before we have minorities. as Dour-. premiers: or prime minister. ‘(There’s a’ socialist’ constitutional. ‘affairs. and labor. minister named” It’s -a really. good idea .because..Sentinel needs new computer’ equipment and _. Taleeb Noormohamed “Moe” whom you may have heard of.) Many white Canadians have voiced concerns about minorities taking their jobs. However, studies have shown that minority groups in Canada created more jobs than they took. They did not, moreover, take these jobs as un- qualified persons; they had to meet the same criteria any other person would have to meet. Minorities have iniegrated into “Canadian”’ society, bringing with them their traditions and religious values. and applying them to a modern-day context. It is -unfor- tunate, however, that some of these ‘“hallowed’’ Canadian in- stitutions, such as Legions, are willing to accept minority members, yet when it comes to allowing their traditional dress in- to the legion (i.e. Sikhs’ turbans), they are denied that privilege. It brings to mind a question. When the Sikhs were serving alongside the Canadians in world wars, were they asked to remove their turbans? I think not. In the time of battle, no one wanted to upset them as they sacrificed their lives. But now, after the fact, it becomes acceptable to shun and shove them aside. *. Many changes hive been made to Canada’s socio-politico- economic structure by minorities. I hope that one day, people will be treated as people, without even the slightest consideration to their race, creed, religious persuasion or color. Only by achieving this will we truly be able to call ourselves the best nation in the world (except for the economy). Working together, side by side, it will be a miniscule task.
