10 — Friday, April 27, 1990 ~ North Shore News Tuna that tastes good and has envircnmentally good taste THIS IS going to be a ‘‘cleaning house’’ column; a grab- bag of assorted tips, queries and updates that have arrived in Ecolnfo’s mailbag over the past weeks.... TUNA UPDATE Chalk up one for the dolphins! The H.J. Heinz company, largest producers of tinned tuna in the world and maker of StarKist tuna, announced recently that it would no longer purchase tuna caught at the expense of dolphins. The Earth Island Institute says it is 100 per cent satisfied with Heinz’s plan to purchase tuna only from vesseis that have a federal observer on board to testify that no dolphins were harmed. Two other major companies, Chicken of the Sea and Bumble- bee, are expected to follow the Heinz example. Earth Island urges consumers to keep up the pressure on other companies, such as B.C. Packers (Cloverleaf and Para- mount brands), which buys 20 per cent of its tuna on the world mar- ket and cannot absolutely guaran- tee that this 20 per cent was caught using methods not harmful to doiphins. Earth Island also suggests con- sumers write H.J. Heinz to ap- plaud them for their decision. Write to Anthony O'Reilly, H.J. Heinz Co., P.O. Box 57, Pitt- sburgh, PA 15230. GREEN VIDEOS What’s on your social calendar this weekend? Why not host a ‘green video”’ night and invite the neighbors over? In commemoration of Earth Day, the National Film Board of Canada has published a pamphlet called ‘*The NFB Environmen- talist: Green Videos,”’ a guide to the NFB’s most recent en- vironmental videos and directions on how to purchase or rent them. Learn about acid rain with David Suzuki in ‘Trouble in the Forest’’ or hear about the threat to our underground water supplies in “The Underlying Threat.” Feminist approaches to spirituality and the environment are documented in the ‘‘Goddess Remembered.” These titles and more are avail- able at the NFB office at 1045 Howe St., 3rd floor (666-0716). Rental charge is $2 per 24-hour period. READERS' COMMENTS If you buy one of Canada Safeway’s new reusable, fold-up shopping bags, you'll be support- ing local industry as well. Mrs. Powell wrote a letter to the health department, with a copy to the News, and I followed it up with Bill Kimmett, Director of En- vironmental Health. Although he didn’t offer any specifics, he told me that the issue is certainly being addressed, and that they are debating whether en- vironmental advantages outweigh public health risks. If there is an instance of tainted food, Mr. Kimmett tells me, it becomes muci: harder to track down the source if people have brought the food home in their own re-used and perhaps not-too- sterile container. He welcomes in- . put; send your comments to his at- tention at the North Shore Heaith Department, 253 E. 14th St., North Vancouver, V7L 2NS. we & A good garden tip from another reader in North Vancouver: Tony Webb writes that the slug and snail bait sold in local garden centres is deadly to pets, birds and wild animals. if plagued by the creatures, Tony has another suggestion: “The use of a deep saucer of beer strategically placed in the garden is a very effective technique to drown slugs and snails, and they may even go with a smile on their face! “This effective beer method is less expensive, humane and elimi- nates the potential death and suf- fering of domestic pets, wildlife and possibly children.”’ se & A tip from the kids at Boundary Community School, who publish their own environmental newspa- per: “If only two per cent of Ca- nadian drivers left their cars at home just one day a week, it would save over 40 million gallons of gas a year. This will prevent 800 million pounds of CO2 from polluting our environment.”’ 2 ke « North Shore News Classified manager Val Stephenson en- courages companies to purchase an overhead projector for use in meetings. The News just bought one, and Val says she is saving reams of paper by using the projector in- stead of ‘‘hand-outs”’ during her staff meetings. They are very easy to use, too, she promises — your information can be quickly trans- ferred on to a transparency using a regular photocopier. =. * Send your environmental tips, questions, success stories and up- coming events to Ecoinfo, North Shore News, 1139 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver, V7M 2H4.
