ONE HALF of Deep Cove Village’s haute cuisine duo is still very much alive and cooking, and that’s good news for Deep Cove fans and gocd focd fans, alike. The recent passing of the Nut- shellinspired much blubbering within dining circles. But weeping gastronomes had only te wander a few short steps up the Gallant Avenue strip to satiate their haute food cravings and stanch the flow of culinary misery. The Savoury has long been one of the North Shore's better restau- rants, playing a somewhat conser- vative big brother to the more ec- centric Nutshel/ over the years that the two were providing a great one-two dining punch for Deep Cove visitors. Its reliability remains intact, and its food, service and atmosphere TIMOTHY | RENSHAW table hopping remain inspired, flamboyant and intimate. Owner and head chef Augusto Pecorelli continues to create col- orful cuisine that bears the distinc- tive character and simmering pas- sion of his native Portugal: abun- dant fresh seafood prepared with a careful balance of simplicity and inspiration so that subt!e seafood flavors prevail over lofty artistic pretensions; pork, veal, steak and the more aristocratic members of the fowl family all benefit from the same Portuguese zest. The Savoury’s menu has chang- ed little since | was last there four years ago. Only the prices have kept pace with the times. Rack of Lamb Djakarta was $16.95 then and is $19.95 now. For anyone who has never sampled this Savoury classic it comes highly recommended. One of the outstanding features of The Savoury (besides its good selection of fine ports) is its table- side service. Flambe and Caesar salad trolleys roll back and forth throughout the evening manned with great effi- ciency and skill by head waiter Peter Milcak, who plays both with the dexterity of a symphony tim- panist. Such table-side theatrics are more the exception than the rule these days, and that’s too bad because they add a touch of much-needed show biz and flash to the all too often restaurant ser- vice by rote. Having declined the offer of ‘‘a drinkie poo”’ from The Savoury’s hostess, | surveyed the restaurant's wine list. It contains some interest- ing departures from the norm: Garrafeira ($30.25), for example, a private reserve Portuguese special- ty wine aged a minimum of two years in cask, came highly recommended by former Nutshell waiter extraordinaire Jeffrey See Savoury Page 25 ees aan Le i NEWS photo Tom Burley SAVOURY HEAD waiter Peter Milicak prepares a Caesar salad at the Deep Cove restaurant.
