RECORD BUSTING SWIMMER Hashimoto strikes gold — SHAVING ALMOST two seconds off the 11 and 12-year-old age group record, Chrissie Hashimoto, of the Chena swim club, stroked her way to six convincing gold medal finishes in the recent Sprint West swim classic, held at UBC Aquatic Centre, and became the first swim- mer ‘in Canada to record the fastest 400 individual medley time for the 1983-84 short course swim Season. The 12-year-old Chrissie touched the finish line with a time of §:12.3 in the 400 in- dividual medley, breaking the 1982 record of 5:14.73 set by Lea Mahood. Chrissie went on to prove her strength by capturing the presented gold in 50 metre freestyle, 200 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 400 IM, and 400 freestyle. She was also with the ‘‘Best Swim of the Meet’’ trophy for her 1:08 finish in the 100 metre butterfly. The. youngster did not stand alone on the winner’s podium, as Chena teammates Steve Ings and Julie Hashimoto were also award- ed trophies for “‘Best Swim of the Meet” in their respective age groups (15-17 years). As a team, Chena won three of six possible in- dividual trophies from a total of 28 teams representing athletes from three provinces and one state, and finished i in the top four. Other finalists and medal winners for Chena were: Steve Ings — 200 IM — gold, 100 free — silver, 200 free — gold, SO free — bronze and 100 back — gold. Julie Hashmoto — 400 free — gold, 200 free — gold, 50 free — fifth, 100 free — gold, 200 IM — silver and 400 IM — gold. Michele Woods — 400 free — eigth.
