NEWS photo lan Seaith WHEN HIS KITCHEN drawer started smoking, Aino Nenonen of North Vancouver figured something was amiss. When he opened the drawer, he found that a large box of Strike-anywhere-type matches, had burst into flames. Nenonen, who reported the incident to the fire department which is investigating it, says he'll be safety matches from now on. It’s believed that the matches, which Nenonen purchased about a month ago, ignited from rubbing against each other when the drawer was opened and closed. Missing woman, 64, found dead in culvert FOUL PLAY is not suspected in the death of a woman whose body was discovered in a culvert in North Vancouver Wednesday afternoon. Police have identified the woman as 64-year-old Anne Skinner Pocklington, who may have died of exposure while trying to sleep in the culvert at Westview and 29th Street. According to North Van- couver RCMP, the elderly woman had gone missing from her residence on the evening of Tuesday, February 7. The woman was burned when she attempted to throw a pot of cooking oil out of her apartment after it had caught fire. Overheated oil in the pot burst into flames, which quickly spread to nearby cup- boards. The woman was burned when the nearby li- quid spread as she lifted the pot from the stove. Fire prevention officials said North Shore residents foman burned in cooking oil blaze & faced with a similar situation should not attempt to move pots from the stove. If it is safe to do so, say of- ficials, turn off the heat and cover the pot with a tight- fitting lid. Don’t use water in an attempt to extinguish the fire as it will cause the burn- ing oil to splatter.
